There are some personality portrait sessions that remind me exactly why I started The Little Travelin’ Studio.
Zayne’s was one of them.
Before his mom, Niki, ever booked his session, she sent me a message. Zayne is a non-verbal 6-year-old with autism, and she wanted to know if a Personality Portrait session was something I could accommodate—or, really, if it was something that would work for him.
My answer was an emphatic YES.
As a Folsom kids’ photographer, I’ve had so many different children sit—or not sit—in front of my camera over the years. Children with different personalities, abilities, sensory needs, comfort levels and ways of communicating. So I felt very confident that we could figure this out together.
The goal was never going to be to make Zayne fit into my session.
The session needed to fit Zayne.
Before every session, I send parents a questionnaire because I want to know a little about the person walking through my door before I ever pick up my camera.
Niki’s answers told me pretty much everything I needed to know.
“The best photos usually happen when he’s free to explore and isn’t pressured to pose. He’s happiest when people follow his lead and make the experience feel like play instead of asking for lots of directions. He loves silly sounds, exaggerated facial expressions, peekaboo, spinning, bubbles, and playful chasing. If you can make him laugh naturally, you’ll usually get his biggest smiles.”
Perfect.
No pressure to pose. No expectation that he needed to look directly into my camera. No checklist of shots we had to somehow accomplish before the timer ran out.
We were just going to play.
But it was the next thing she wrote that really stayed with me:
“More than anything, I just want these photos to capture who he truly is. His little quirks, curiosity, and genuine personality mean so much to me, even if he isn’t looking at the camera. Those authentic moments are the ones I’ll treasure forever.”
That.
That is exactly what Personality Portraits are supposed to be.
From the minute Zayne walked in, he was BEAMING.
He was happy. He was curious. He was full of this contagious kind of joy—and such an obvious reflection of a momma who absolutely adores him.
And honestly?
These photos weren’t prompted.
They weren’t forced.
They were just captured.
We followed his lead. We played. We let expressions come and go without trying to recreate them. I wasn’t waiting for the traditional “look here and smile” photo because that wasn’t the point.
I wanted the eyebrow.
The grin.
The belly laugh.
The quiet little expression that lasted half a second.
The way his eyes lit up when something made him happy.
All of it.
Because when I look through Zayne’s gallery, I really feel like we captured the essence of him.
Not my version of what a six-year-old portrait is supposed to look like.
Not a perfectly posed version for the camera.
When clients book a session with The Little Travelin’ Studio, their gallery is delivered in black and white.
There’s a reason for that.
These are Personality Portraits, and I don’t think anything highlights personality quite like removing all the distractions of color.
Suddenly, you’re looking at them.
The one eyebrow slightly higher than the other.
Five completely different versions of their smile.
The serious face.
The nose scrunch.
The giant, open-mouth belly laugh.
The expression you recognize immediately because you’ve seen it a thousand times from across your kitchen table.
Black and white has a way of stripping everything else away and leaving behind the part I care about most: your child.
Niki chose to upgrade Zayne’s gallery to include all of the color versions too, and those feel like a completely different experience. Same little boy. Same expressions. Same moments. But an entirely different way of seeing them.
When I delivered Zayne’s gallery, Niki sent me messages that I don’t think I’ll forget anytime soon.
“These are absolutely beautiful, I got emotional when I saw them. You captured his eyes perfectly. Thank you again so much and for working with him so well!”
Then:
“You captured his expressions so beautifully, thank you!”
And finally:
“They are amazing! I’m so impressed with all of them, they came out so perfect. Thank you again so much!”
This is the stuff.
Not because every photo was technically perfect.
Not because we managed to get Zayne to do everything I asked him to do.
We didn’t need him to.
The win was that his mom opened that gallery and saw her son.
I think this is especially important for parents who may have looked at Personality Portraits and thought:
My child would never sit there.
They won’t look at the camera.
They don’t take directions.
They might need to move.
They communicate differently.
I don’t know how they’ll react.
Please don’t let that be the reason you don’t document them.
A Personality Portrait session isn’t about your child performing for me. I don’t need a perfect smile, perfect eye contact or a perfectly still kid.
I need them.
Sometimes that means I direct.
Sometimes I make ridiculous noises.
Sometimes we play.
Sometimes I chase.
Sometimes I wait.
And sometimes I simply have my camera ready when that tiny little expression their mom knows by heart finally appears.
Because someday, the things that feel so ordinary right now won’t be ordinary anymore.
Zayne will never be six again.
But his mom will always be able to come back to these photographs and remember his joy, his curiosity, those eyes, those expressions and every little piece of the boy he was in this exact season. She walked away with 100 high-end, hand-edited photos to fill her walls and heart.
And that is why we take the picture.
The Little Travelin’ Studio creates timeless black-and-white Personality Portraits for babies, children and teens, with sessions designed to make room for the child who actually shows up—not an expectation of who they should be in front of the camera.
If your child needs extra time to warm up, communicates differently, prefers movement over sitting, isn’t interested in eye contact, has sensory considerations, or simply has absolutely zero intention of doing what a photographer tells them to do… tell me about them.
We’ll meet them where they are.
Because their personality is the whole point.

Choosing a photographer is more personal than most people realize. You’re not just hiring someone to tell you to smile and press a button—you’re inviting them into your story. The real one. The one where you sneak a kiss in your kitchen as an engaged couple, or say “I do” with shaking hands, or welcome a brand new human into your home while running on love and very little sleep.
You’re trusting me to read the room. To coax a grin out of a napless toddler or make a camera-shy partner forget there’s even a lens nearby. You’re handing me the quiet, fleeting, wildly important moments—and I don’t take that lightly.
So let’s do it. Let’s bottle up the feeling of this season and hang it on your walls where you can see it every day. The real stuff. The kind you’ll never want to forget.
